What's the difference?

Susan Patashny, R.N., Tattoo Artist, Esthetician

As a permanent makeup artist I'm most frequently asked “What's the difference between Microblading and Powder Brow Tattoo?”

Microblading creates hair-like strokes by implanting pigment with a hand tool which has a series of needles attached at the tip. It is an advanced tattoo technique, ideal for those that already have a decent amount of brow hair. Microblading fills in gaps and can add a bit of thickness to the existing brow. Less pigment is used than with a Powder Brow Tattoo and color boosts are needed in 12-18 months.

Powder Brow Tattoo is a traditional method of cosmetic tattooing in which a tattoo machine is used. When properly applied, using a dilution solution, eyebrows look soft and natural, contrary to a “magic marker” brow look. More pigment is implanted than with Microblading and color boosts are usually needed in 2 years. This technique is for those that want more of a powdery looking, filled brow.

A Combo Brow Tattoo is when a Powder Brow Tattoo & Microblading are used together to create more dimension than a Powder Brow or Microblading can produce separately. Perfect when client has sparse brow hair. The Combo technique creates definition and longevity. 2-3 years before a color boost is usually needed.

** Although color boosts are needed, these techniques are all tattoo and considered

permanent, not semi-permanent.
